Windows agent — Installation
The RDS agent for Windows turns a PC running 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 (any edition) into a player managed from the RDS panel, with the same modes as the Linux agent: web kiosk and playlist.
Requirements
- 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, any edition.
- About 150 MB free and administrator rights to install.
- For kiosk mode only (optional): Windows 10 or 11 Enterprise, Education or IoT Enterprise (LTSC recommended).
Basic mode and kiosk mode
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Basic mode (default, and always on Home and Pro) | The player starts by itself at sign-in and fills the screen, but nothing is locked down: whoever stands at the screen can reach the desktop and Task Manager. After a restart or a power cut someone has to sign in for it to play again, unless the PC has automatic sign-in configured. The panel marks these screens as "Basic mode". |
| Kiosk mode (optional; Enterprise, Education or IoT Enterprise) | The installer creates a Windows account just for the screen, which signs in by itself at power-on and opens the agent instead of the desktop. It blocks system keys (Windows, Alt+Tab…) and Task Manager, and if the agent closes it reopens. After a power cut it goes straight back to the agent. |
Kiosk mode is only switched on if you ask for it; the installer never enables it by itself.
Install
- In Downloads → Windows Agent press Download installer (.exe).
- When you open it, Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen). That is normal for a new program: press More info and then Run anyway. First check that the warning and the administrator prompt name the publisher PROMO-TIENDA, SL.
- In the wizard, tick Enable kiosk lockdown only if you want kiosk mode. On editions that do not support it the box is disabled. Without it, basic mode is installed.
- When it finishes, restart the PC. With kiosk mode, Windows signs in to the kiosk account by itself; in basic mode, you sign in with your usual account (no automatic sign-in is configured).
- The agent opens full screen and shows the code to link the screen. See Pair by QR.
Unattended installation
| Command | Result |
|---|---|
setup.exe /S |
Installs in basic mode. On a PC that already has the agent, it keeps the mode it had. |
setup.exe /S /KIOSK=1 |
Installs or updates with kiosk mode. |
setup.exe /S /KIOSK=0 |
Basic mode; if the PC was in kiosk mode, it removes it. |
Switching an installed PC from basic to kiosk mode or back (with the installer box or with
/KIOSK=1//KIOSK=0) erases its RDS pairing: the screen has to be paired again afterwards.
Settings on the screen
The settings menu is the same as on Linux: 5 taps in the top-left corner and the access code (0000 from the factory until another is set). See Settings on the screen. Under System, the Lockdown card says whether the kiosk lockdown is active.
Exit kiosk
In the menu, System tab, Exit kiosk (requires agent 2.0.4 or later and asks for confirmation):
- Kiosk mode: signs the kiosk account out of Windows. The screen shows the Windows sign-in, where an administrator can sign in and get the normal desktop. The kiosk stays configured: the next restart starts it again.
- Basic mode: closes the player and leaves the desktop as it is. It starts again at the next sign-in.
Update
The agent updates from RDS, without reinstalling: Device panel → Agent version. Details. An update keeps the PC's mode, basic or kiosk. You can also run the installer from Downloads again: the pairing is kept.
Uninstall
Uninstall rds-agent from Windows settings, with an administrator account. If the PC was in kiosk mode, the Windows desktop is restored and the screen's account is removed.
